The Place to Find Compound Hunting Bows and Accessories
When buying a compound hunting bow, many things must be considered in order to ensure that you are getting the bow that is right for you. The first thing to know is your draw length. You must be able to just feel the back wall of the draw when you are at full draw. This will ensure that you are able to maintain your form while holding a draw. It is best to actually go to a brick and mortar bow shop and have them measure your draw length. If you must find it yourself, you must hold your arms out straight, with your hands facing the front. Measure from the tip of your right middle finger to the tip of the left middle finger making sure not to stretch. Divide the measurement in inches by 2.5. This will give you a fairly close number. The problem with this is that you must also take into account your d-loop, and any length that your release may add. Buying a compound hunting bow that has to long of a draw length will decrease the efficiency of the bow, and may cause you to slap your forearm with the bow string.
The second thing you must consider is draw weight. Many new compound bow hunters have been ruined on the sport by following their ego, rather than buying the compound hunting bow that was right for them. Every bow hunter wants to say that they shoot a 70 lb. Draw weight. You must ask yourself if you can draw this bow enough times in a session to properly sight it in and be accurate enough to make an ethical shot on that Elk, Bear, Deer, or Turkey you are hunting. Do not be foolish enough to force yourself to shoot a compound hunting bow that is turned up to high. You will find yourself with a torn rotator cuff, or in a stand in the middle of January and to cold to be able to draw your big bad bow on that monster you have dreamed about. The good news is that most bows can have the draw weight adjusted, but remember that they must be re-sited after adjustment.
Another important aspect to finding the right compound hunting bow is brace height. This is the distance from the throat of the grip to the bow string when it is not drawn. A short brace height is an indication of a faster compound bow. A longer brace height is indicative of a more accurate bow. The reason for this is due to the length of time the arrow is in contact with the bow string.
